So you want to know about our company? Well, let's start at the beginning and work
our way up from there.
KS Design started as a 19 year old boy's dream of owning his own company. While
attending college and working for a computer firm
in Crawfordsville, Indiana that boy; Kyle Schultz, started tinkering with hardware,
BIOS settings, databases, and HTML.
Starting with a blank notepad file and a 33.6 dial-up connection Kyle started building
his first website by hand using standard html for IE 4.0 by viewing source of existing
sites and teaching himself the tags and their meanings. This would not be his last
site. College played a key factor in Kyle's ability to teach himself new technologies
and strategies. With a degree in computer programming for languages such as Visual
Basic 6.0, C++ 6.0, COBOL and RPG Kyle had no idea he would never use these languages
in his professional career.
Ready to face the world armed with a degree and an ego to boot, Kyle hit the workplace
as a sales associate for a computer hardware shop in Indianapolis, IN full time
and continued working part time for the computer firm in Crawfordsville, IN. The
sales position gave him the knowledge of many different types of computer hardware
and software and gave him the ability to expand his knowledge of inner PC components
to the extent that he could build any machine.
A personal computer for Grandma? sure, a small business server to control a small
5-10 user peer to peer network? sure. He even obtained the knowledge to build complex
server machines, hosting networks for hundreds of users and databases.
While working for the computer firm in Crawfordsville, IN Kyle assisted in the wiring
of the local court house, many businesses, and countless consumer PC fixes. In his
downtime he continued to feed his thirst for programming. Building his first full
blown Microsoft Access database system, controlling inventory and sales for a local
gutter covering company, his application was a success. So much so, that he was
named the resident "Database programmer". Little did he know at the time, how much
he didn't know yet? Building databases for his church, dental laboratories, local
companies, and even just for fun he taught himself how to efficiently design relationships,
keys, data types, and table structures that not only housed data in a very effective
manner; it was very easy to expand upon.
Though Kyle still hadn't established his own company yet he continued to build customer
relationships, which still exist to this day.
In 1998 Kyle went to work for Banjo
Corporation a local company in Crawfordsville, IN. He was hired in as their
Network Administrator. His duties included supporting a 100+ user network with 3
servers, and fiber optic switches. It was here that Kyle was able to teach himself
how to build web sites. Though his first attempt at Banjo's website was a rudimentary
one, he was successful and that same site is still in use today. Though not as cosmetically
appealing as some of his later work, this site was very functional. Via a Microsoft
SQL Server 2000 DTS Package data was transferred from the company's local AS/400
system into the SQL Server database, and this newly imported data is what controls
the data driven website that can be found at
http://www.banjocorp.com.
In 2001 Kyle went to work for IKON Office Solutions assisting with the Technical
Support of a multi million dollar project that they had at the time. He was responsible
for a 70+ user network, 7 servers, switches, software, and PC updates. His already
extensive knowledge of hardware, databases, Visual Basic, VBA, and DOS Batch file
programming was about to pay off. Kyle developed many applications that IKON used
to automate and streamline the Quality Assurance process of their project. This
was just a temporary position, and he knew it.
Therefore in 2002 Kyle went to work for Teleservices Direct, a telemarketing company located in
Indianapolis IN. It would be this company that would lay the ground work for Kyle's
ability to open KS Design. He joined their team as a software developer. Little
did he know at the time that
Teleservices Direct was using Visual FoxPro 6.0, UNIX, and host of other
applications he had no idea how to support. What did he get himself into? Well he
got himself into a position that forced him into teaching himself new languages.
And that he did. In the short three year term he worked for Teleservices Direct Kyle was able to teach himself many
new technologies.
SQL Server Trans-act SQL Statements, Visual FoxPro 6.0, UNIX, Linux, Cisco Programming,
C# 2.0, XHTML, JavaScript, VBA for Office 2000, and Access Integration to Excel
and Fox Pro.
While working for Teleservices
Direct Kyle had no idea how important the languages and technologies he
was able to teach himself were going to be in his very near future. Upon joining
the Teleservices Direct
team Kyle was designated to learn and support a telemarketing system which was designed
by Strategic Computer Support,
now know as SER. This telemarketing system was the most state of the art system
ranging across 4 servers, running 60+ stations, controlled by a SQL Server database,
he had done it, hit the big time. He was supporting a system which was generating
the company millions of dollars of revenue, and while supporting the system he found
out the true meaning of "uptime". Figure it up, with 60 stations, all dialing; for
every minute the center was down they were losing one billable hour of calling time.
After supporting the system and writing some very complex HTML / JavaScript based
calling scripts for it Kyle had secured his position with the company, he had built
a system that was functional and efficient. Due to his success, he was promoted
to a client manager, and was then assigned the task of building the company's calling
list scrubbing system. Utilizing Microsoft SQL Server and C# along with a lot of
long nights, Kyle built a system that took the scrub process from taking over one
hour to run, down to a few minutes, most of the time in just seconds. This was one
of the milestones in his career. He had successfully taught himself how to code
in Microsoft .Net with a SQL Server backend that was so completely automated and
relationalized it would revolutionalize the way that Teleservices Direct would scrub their lists from then on.
In the spring of 2004 Kyle moved on. He went to work for Web Excellence, a web-design
company in Indianapolis IN and was placed as a contract programmer for Helios, the software division of Australian Gold. After
a few months of working for Web Excellence,
Helios bought them out, and he went to work directly for Helios. It was while working here that Kyle would expand
his knowledge of Microsoft .Net programming into the realm of Microsoft .Net 2.0.
Though he was forced to use Visual Basic, the concepts of the programming were the
same as they were with C#. Not only was Kyle part of the web development team for
Back Office he was also tasked with the job of developing the API interface for
the receipt printers, which would run on the new software as well.
While working for Helios Kyle
was contacted by one of the owners from SCS, yes, the company that had the telemarketing
dialer at Teleservices. SCS had a customer that required assistance and he knew
that Kyle was a qualified programmer so in November of 2005 Kyle started working
with Quancor Virtual Sales & Marketing (QVSM)
on a part time consultant basis. It would be this customer that would forever change
the way Kyle looked at his career choices and future.
Kyle continued to use the name KS Design for his self employed name, and would continue
to teach himself new technologies and business management tactics. In October 2007
Kyle finally established KS Design, LLC. He and his wife, Marceline (Marci) are
the owners. Kyle handles a majority of the business matters but still relies on
Marci's input when faced with difficult decisions.
Kyle is now fluent in a multitude of languages, and if your company needs a solution
he can get the job done. KS Design has grown leaps and bounds in just a few short
years, and continues to grow more and more as time goes on. Since establishing KS
Design, LLC the customer base has increased to 10 times what it was when they first
officially opened.
Offering
Software Development,
Custom Business Solutions,
Database Development,
and other
IT related services
has enabled KS Design to be a full service company. Not only does KS Design still
support all their current customers, they have at least 3 new contacts a month.
Kyle has focused his entire professional life on ways to make KS Design not your
typical small business. He runs the company in such a way that it can be a full
service IT company but yet creatively develop solutions to match it's customer’s
needs. KS Design might be small in size, but it maximizes resources available to
provide its customers with the quality of service they have come to expect and deserve.
Not only does Kyle thrive on taking a customers idea and bringing it to life,
he knows that a great idea doesn’t just build a great business, it builds great
relationships.
